Meet Leo-Lion August, one of the new youth representatives to the United Nations this year! He will be working with UNICEF, the UN’s agency for children.
Leo-Lion August S. Valera III from San Francisco, California, USA, began his journey with Lions International in 2007 when he joined the Gryphons Leo Club. He then became the first Leo-Lion member in District 4-C4, joining the San Francisco Fil-Am Lions club in 2014. He has served in numerous leadership roles including club president, zone and region chairperson, district Global Service Team coordinator and IT chairperson during the COVID-19 pandemic, district Leo chairperson, and member of the multiple district Marketing committee for many years. His awards include multiple International President’s certificates, the MD 4 Excellence award, district Leo of the Year and district Lion of the Year, and he is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. He has also presented at numerous district officer trainings, multiple district conventions, the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum and Lions International Convention. He studied computer engineering and computer science at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and now works as a software engineer in Silicon Valley.
Meet Lion Dorina, our second new youth representative to the United Nations this year! She will be working with the World Food Programme.
Lion Dorina from Budapest, Hungary, is a young Lion having recently graduated from the Leo-Lion program. She began her journey with Lions International in 2013 when she joined the Spirit Leo Club. She served four terms as Leo district vice president and was the international liaison officer (ILO) of Hungary for three years, including one year as an ILO board member. She co-founded the first Hungarian Leo-Lions club, Budapest Next Generation, and served as club president. She also helped organize the Leo Europa Forum in 2018 and has represented Hungarian Leos at a variety of international forums. From 2022 to 2024, she served as a Leo Advisory Panelist representing Constitutional Area IV. As a first-year Panelist she was co-chairperson of the Transition Committee, and in her second year she was chairperson of the Membership Experience Committee. She studied Romance language and literature, specializing in French, at the Eötvön Loránd University in Budapest. She is fluent in Hungarian, English and French and has also studied Polish, Finnish and Spanish.
